See Where Your Money Goes, Without the Spreadsheet

Upload your bank and card statements and let an agent categorize every transaction, compare it to your budget and draft a monthly report. Every amount links back to the statement line it came from.

An illustrative example run, not customer data.

The Challenge

Tracking personal spending means downloading statements, remembering how you tagged things last month and rebuilding the same spreadsheet every time. Paste it into a public chatbot and you hand over your financial data.

Manual Tracking Problems:

  • Hours re-tagging the same merchants every month
  • Easy to miss duplicate or unusual charges
  • Budgets never compared to actual spending
  • Financial data should not leave your control

The Solution

Upload the statements to a workspace and let an agent categorize the transactions, compare them to your budget and draft the report. You review the flagged items instead of rebuilding the spreadsheet.

Assisted Tracking Benefits:

  • Amounts with statement and line references
  • Consistent categories month after month
  • Budget compared to actual spending
  • Runs in your cloud or self-hosted

Step-by-Step Tutorial

Set up your monthly spending report

1

Create the Spending Analyst Agent

Create an agent that works only from your statements and always cites its sources.

Agent Configuration:

  • Name: Spending Analyst
  • System Prompt: "Work only from the provided statements. State the statement and line for every amount. Never estimate numbers. Assign one category per transaction."
  • Tools: search_data_item, read_data_item, create_file
2

Upload the Statements

Add your bank and card statements to a conversation or context. Text and scanned PDFs are processed and become searchable.

3

Request the Report

Ask for the categorized totals and the budget comparison in one request.

Example Prompt:

"Categorize every transaction using the taxonomy, total the spending per category, compare each total against the budget, and flag unusual or duplicated charges. Give the statement and line for each amount, then create a Markdown report and a CSV of the transactions."

4

Review and Save

Check the flagged items, download the report and keep the file as your monthly record. The audit trail records which statements were used.

Note: AI can misread statement tables. Treat the output as a draft and verify key amounts against the cited lines before relying on them.

How It Works

Behind the scenes: from statement to spending report

1. Ingest

Statements are uploaded and processed into searchable, embedded context.

2. Retrieve

The agent searches across statements for the relevant transactions.

3. Categorize

Transactions are categorized and totalled, then compared to the budget.

4. Govern

Documents, access and actions are recorded in an audit trail.

Technical Capabilities

Document Processing:

  • Text-based and scanned statements
  • Multiple accounts and months per report
  • Source references for extracted amounts
  • Workspace-level access control

Tools Used:

  • search_data_item: Find relevant transactions
  • read_data_item: Read statement lines
  • create_file: Generate report and CSV
